Presentation Formats
The ADC offers two presentation categories – Symposia and Masterclasses. During the symposia abstract submission process, you will be asked to select your preferred category. Please see the descriptions below when selecting the most appropriate choice. Please note that in the event your submission is accepted for a presentation, you may be allocated a different presentation format than the one you have selected during the submission process.
Symposium: A symposium should include 2-4 presenters (4 presenters max), each presenting different aspects of a topic that is logically developed and thought-provoking. It may provide new information, application of evidence or an opportunity to generate discussion. Symposia should be appropriate for audiences of 100+ delegates and will be held in large meeting rooms, with chairs arranged in rows (lecture-theatre-style).
Masterclass: A masterclass should be presented by 2-3 presenters (3 presenters max) with a focus on a particular topic and explore the practical applicability of research or theory to practice. It should allow sufficient time for audience questions and/or provide some hands-on or group practicum. Masterclasses should be appropriate for audiences of 50-100 delegates and will be held in large meeting rooms, with chairs arranged in rows. Masterclasses should be appropriate for audiences of 50-100 delegates and will be held in a large meeting room, with chairs arranged in round table formats with 5 to 8 chairs per table (cabaret style).
Submissions featuring local presenters are encouraged.
All sessions, regardless of the category can be 1.5 or 2 hours in length. This includes your session opening/speaker introductions and your session closing/question time. The length of your session will be confirmed upon notification of your outcomes.
You are welcome to chair your own session or nominate your own chair(s) (2 chairs max) for your session who are likely to be familiar with your topic and be able to ask insightful questions and moderate audience questions. You will be asked to include contact details for your session chair(s) as part of your abstract submission. If contact details for your session chair(s) have not been provided, you will be allocated a chair at the discretion of the Program Organising Committee.
Training for session chairs will be available closer to the date.
ADEA strongly encourages all symposium and masterclass submissions to include the voices of people with lived experience of diabetes. Lived experience brings depth, relevance and authenticity to discussions of diabetes care, and helps delegates connect evidence and practice to what matters most to people living with diabetes. This can be done in several ways: a person with lived experience could join your session as a co-presenter (within the maximum of three presenters), serve as a session co-chair, or have their perspectives built into the presentation itself, for example through shared stories, co-designed content or recorded insights shared with consent.
ADEA encourages everyone referring to and about people with diabetes to be mindful of the power of language. When writing your abstract and preparing your presentation, please refer to the Diabetes Australia Language Position Statement, which is also available on the website in the call for abstracts tab.
Your abstract should provide delegates with an overview of your proposed session. A template is available to download here and will guide you to provide the following sections as part of your abstract.
